It’s Financial Friday — party time!
Every Friday morning, I have a standing “date” with myself.
I call it “Financial Friday!”
Or, “Financial Friiii-daaaaaaaaaaaay!!!”
I say it in my head like I’m jumping out from behind a couch at a surprise party: “Surpriiiiiiise!”
or, like I’ve just rolled a yahtzee in Yahtzee, the exciting game of skill and chance:
“YAHT-ZEEEEEE!”
If I make it sound fun, it will be fun.
So...
Financial Friday is 30-60 minutes each week where I “tidy up” my financial life:
I look at all my account balances,
reconcile my receipts,
pay any bills that aren’t automated (I’m lookin’ at you Con Edison), and
take pics or download any business-related expense receipts.
It’s the best (most consistent) way to stay on top of all your money stuff.
I know a lot of you avoid looking at your money, checking your accounts, or organizing your receipts because it stresses you out.
I know, because you’ve told me. (That’s why I expanded the money coaching in my 6-month program last year — a whole month dedicated to organizing your finances and learning best practices and mindset shifts around money.)
You think organizing your money is going to take forever.
But really, it only takes forever when you ignore it... when you wait, avoid, procrastinate — when you go through your receipts and accounts just once-a-year at tax time — that’s when it takes FOREVER.
But doing it once-a-week is digestible.
What did I say about the elephant earlier this week?
I want you to get your 2020 tax year off on the right foot.
Make a date with yourself and just start.
The first time will take longer than an hour. That’s OK. You’re catching up. Work on it in small chunks. An hour today... an hour tomorrow…..
But then it will become easier and faster and more enjoyable.
You will feel more in control and relaxed about your money, and in time, you will be a billionnaire counting your billions! (accounting for inflation, of course) :)
